OUR VISIT TO SAN PEDRO:
The other intern Laurie from our University is teaching at a private school in the San Pedro so we decided to take a trip up there and check out her school. Wow, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw this school.
The woman who owns it is married to the distributor of Bowen and Bowen which makes them
millionaires. When she came to Belize she did not want her children to attend a school with corporal punishment so they started this private school. It is the first and only school in Belize to ban the use of corporal punishment and it is definitely the nicest school seen in Belize. When we first walked by we thought that it was a resort, each classroom is a little air conditioned cabana on the beach, with a volleyball court, it is beautiful. The classes are capped at 16 and the little cabana where they have their assemblies is super cool! It was refreshing to be in such tiny class sizes and we were fortunate enough to observe Laurie’s teacher who is incredible. We couldn’t believe how much we learned just observing a morning in her class, she is from New York and previously taught in the private schools there. She taught infant 2 and I would pretty much be in heaven having her position. She used a lot of movement and creative ideas with the class and it made me realize that I need to observe teachers as much as possible because it helps you to constantly deveoplment and learn as a teacher. It was neat to talk to Laurie and com
pare our experiences which sound like VERY different placements, she is hoping to make a visit here and check out our classes. We weren’t overly impressed with San Pedro, extremely expensive and we missed the friendly atmosphere of PG. Although, we were pretty pumped to find some clothing stores which sold swimsuits since ours are looking a little rough and a real supermarket complete with milk and good sunscreen….ahh the little luxuries we miss! Even though the school was incredible in San Pedro we were so happy to come to our safe little town of PG!

Melissa,
Great blog. Been keeping up I have. I like the idea of visiting other schools to see what is happening in their knick of the woods. We are working on setting up exchanges here in Christchurch. The schools we are at are all in different parts of the city which obviously house different types of students and school settings. Will report more later once we make the visits. Thanks for reminding us on the good old blog.
C.
PS: today marks the halfway point for NZ PS3 students...
